Joseph Pilates developed a method of exercise and physical movement designed to improve strength, flexibility, posture, as well as enhanced mental awareness. His method was originally known as Contrology and was designed to teach the body to move efficiently and with control, through the practice and repetition of these exercises; combined with focused breathing patterns the method would lead to uniform development, increased lung capacity and ease of motion through everyday life. Pilates exercises are gentle on the joints but work to condition the entire body.
